Ingredients

  • 9 lasagne sheets
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 500 g beef mince
  • 400 g canned chopped tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato purée
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 600 ml whole milk
  • 50 g butter
  • 50 g plain flour
  • 100 g grated cheddar cheese
  • Grated Parmesan cheese for topping

Instructions

Prepare the Meat Sauce:

  • Heat some oil in a pan. Add chopped onions and minced garlic. Cook until softened.
  • Add the beef mince, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, and cook until browned.
  • Pour in the chopped tomatoes, tomato purée, and dried oregano. Season with salt and pepper. Simmer for about 20 minutes until thickened.

Make the Béchamel Sauce

  • In a separate saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Add the flour, stirring continuously for 1-2 minutes to make a paste.
  • Gradually pour in the milk, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Cook until the sauce thickens. Stir in the grated cheddar cheese until melted. Remove from heat.

Assemble the Lasagne

  • Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
  • Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of a baking dish.
  • Place a layer of lasagne sheets over the sauce, followed by more meat sauce and a drizzle of béchamel sauce.
  • Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used, ending with a generous layer of béchamel sauce on top.

Bake:

  • Sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese over the top of the lasagne.
  • Cover the dish with foil and bake for about 40-45 minutes.
  • Remove the foil for the last 10 minutes of baking to allow the top to turn golden and bubbly.
