- Self-raising flour
- Baking powder
- Butter
- Grated mature cheddar cheese
- Salt
- Black pepper
- Milk
- Optional: Mustard powder or cayenne pepper for extra flavor
Preheat the oven to 220°C/200°C fan/Gas 7 and line a baking sheet with baking paper.
Sift the flour, baking powder, salt, mustard powder, and cayenne pepper into a large bowl.
Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
Stir in the cheese.
Beat the egg in a jug and add enough milk to make up to 300ml (10fl oz) of liquid.
Gradually add the liquid to the dry mixture, stirring until a soft dough forms.
Tip the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead lightly until smooth.
Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces.
Shape each piece into a round and place on the prepared baking sheet.
Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown.
Serve warm or cold, with your favorite spread.
